Jammu and Kashmir launches a Rs 4.5 crore heritage centre for the mystic poet Lalleshwari

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha laid the foundation stone of the Mata Lalleshwari Cultural and Heritage Centre at Mata Bhaderkali Asthapan in Thalwal, Jammu, on September 19, according to The Kashmir Monitor. The project is sanctioned under the Capex budget with an allocation of Rs 4.5 crore and is meant to preserve the legacy of Yogini Lalleshwari, the outlet reports.

What the centre will house#

Sinha said the centre will organize displays of art, support translation projects, and maintain archives, and will support fellowships in Kashmir Shaivism, a philosophical tradition, while creating opportunities for young people through creative pursuits, The Kashmir Monitor reports.

Daily Excelsior reports the event was organised by the Mata Bhaderkali Asthapan Trust to mark the Jayanti, or birth anniversary, of Lalleshwari, whom the outlet describes as a 14th century Shiv Yogni of medieval Kashmir.

Sinha said the teachings of Mata Lalleshwari transcend social divisions and embody tolerance, equality and inner transformation, and that her verses resonate with the Upanishads, according to The Kashmir Monitor. Greater Kashmir quotes him calling the centre a project that "reminds us of our timeless civilisational consciousness."

Sinha's case for spiritual resources#

Sinha told the gathering that the centre would offer visitors a path to inner tranquility while simultaneously generating economic benefits through increased footfall from pilgrims, academics and travelers, The Kashmir Monitor reports.

Daily Excelsior quotes Sinha saying that "in today's fast-paced life, people are facing unprecedented mental stress, crises of identity and the challenges of existential loneliness," and that he believes the teachings of saints such as Mata Lalleshwari can offer spiritual guidance to foster self-control, inner calm and the capacity to withstand emotional hardship.

Sinha said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of integrating heritage with development, according to both The Kashmir Monitor and Daily Excelsior.

Other pilgrimage activity in the region#

Sinha flagged off the Harmukh-Gangbal pilgrimage at Ganderbal on the preceding Friday, calling it a sacred bridge between India's past and present, Hindustan Times reports. He said Mount Harmukh is revered as the abode of Lord Shiva and Gangbal Lake, situated at 14,500 feet, embodies the divine manifestation of Mother Ganga, quoting the Nilamata Purana.

Separately, Swami Hridayanand Giri Ji Maharaj told Sinha about a proposed Amba Yagya planned for the Tawi River Front in Jammu from February 6 to 15, 2027, which organisers say will include 51 Havan Kunds and the participation of 11,000 women in a Kalash Yatra, thekashmirimages.com reports.
