THE DEVIL TAROT KEY WORDS
Before diving deeper into the upright- and reversed Devil tarot card meaning, and its connection to love, career, and life, below is a quick overview of the most important words connected to this Major Arcana card.
Upright | Material focus, trapped in bondage, addictions and depression, negative thinking, betrayal |
Reversed | Overcoming addiction, independence, reclaiming power, detachment, freedom |
Yes or No | No |
THE DEVIL TAROT CARD DESCRIPTION
Baphomet, half man, half goat-headed deity, represents the Devil on this Major Arcana card. With wings and a pentagram in the center of his horned head, this evil being is perched on a pedestal.
His wings are a figurative representation of how focusing on carnal desires can lead to a parasitic life cycle. His hypnotic stare and the lit torch in his hand remind us how tempting unhealthy things can be.
Below his massive figure are two humans, a man, and a woman, standing naked. Both have chains around their necks that link back to the Devil, signifying the control that he has over them.
Although they are clearly people, both have horns and tails, which further symbolizes how deeply these two are entrapped. Both the male and female have things attached to these tails grapes/fire, wealth/passion.
THE DEVIL TAROT CARD MEANINGS
The Devil is the card of illusion. Although you have total control of your life, beliefs, and choices, the Upright Devil tarot card symbolizes how addiction, depression, and unhealthy bonds can make you feel out of control.
Even social media, exercise, and work can be embodied by the Devil when in excess. Regardless of the nature of your particular problem, the message of the Devil is clear: redirect your attention away from the satisfaction of desires and toward the things that really matter.
Money and Career Meaning
Are you trapped in a job you hate? Do you feel as if you’re a slave to debt? The Devil tarot card appears in financial and career readings when powerlessness is an overshadowing emotion. You may feel like a rat on a wheel, unable to get anywhere despite constant movement.
If this is the case, you should take a time-out to evaluate your current situation and talk to a trusted friend or family member about the next steps.
Just make sure that the person you confide in is someone who really has your back since the Devil can predict a conman is in the midst.
Love and Relationships Meaning
When the Devil tarot card represents you or your partner in a love reading, the news isn’t good. In love and relationship spreads, the Devil represents someone who is selfish, abusive, and unfaithful–so caught up in lusty desires that not much else matters.
Addiction and mental health issues may also be playing a part in the demise of the relationship.
If this is the case, you’ll both need to seek the right kind of help for your individual struggles. Your relationship isn’t necessarily doomed, but you’ll need to make healing a top priority.
If addiction isn’t a hidden factor in your relationship or friendships, the Devil suggests that someone is feeling trapped.
Maybe you’re single and feel like you’ll never find the one. Perhaps you’re committed, and for one reason or another, things aren’t moving in the right direction.
Don’t be so quick to give up on love or break things off. Instead, consider a reset with a single (or couples) getaway and some time spent doing things that you really enjoy.
Health and Spirituality Meaning
The Devil tarot card in a health reading can personify the effects that risky behavior and lack of self-care can have on one’s body and mind.
Take note of any areas you are over-indulging in that might be leading to a decline in your overall well-being. Then, figure out ways to improve in these areas a little at a time.
If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues, make getting help a priority.
Spirituality readings that include the Devil tarot card revolve around a fear of one’s own psychic abilities. Do you have subconscious programming that is telling you that divination and connecting to things that are metaphysical is the work of Satan?
If so, it is time to deal with these beliefs once and for all. You’ll never be able to grow spiritually until you take an authentic inventory of your personal value system.
THE DEVIL UPRIGHT TAROT MEANING
When the Devil card appears upright in a tarot reading, it serves as a profound reminder to examine the areas of our lives where we may be ensnared by bad habits and self-imposed limitations.
While the Devil card represents temptation and the darker aspects of our human experience, its upright position signifies an opportunity for personal growth, liberation, and reclaiming our power.
Embracing the upright Devil card’s energy means taking an honest inventory of our lives, acknowledging the areas where we may be under the influence of destructive forces, and making a conscious choice to break free from their hold.
Through self-reflection, self-discipline, and a commitment to personal growth, we can transcend the limitations imposed by our own fears and reclaim our power.
THE DEVIL REVERSED TAROT READING
Are you ready to level up? The Reversed Devil Tarot card has a much more positive meaning than its upright twin.
The Devil often appears in the upside-down position when the person receiving the reading is preparing to go to a higher plane. There is one catch though–you must first let go of negative and unhealthy attachments. By detaching, you’ll be able to reclaim your power and freedom.
Although this change is a good thing, you must remember that beginnings are usually messy.
Just be patient with the path of your transition and deal with things one by one. You’ll be surprised with the results as you go on. Go on and seek self-improvement gradually.
The Devil: Yes or No
The Devil in a yes or no reading is a hard no. Because it is associated with violence, bad luck, abuse, and everything negative and harmful, it brings little to the table except a warning.
If you receive the Devil tarot card during a ‘yes or no’ reading, take it as a sign that what you are hoping for isn’t in your best interest. It may be time to reroute.
Important Card Combinations
The Devil symbolizes how addiction, depression, and unhealthy bonds can make you feel out of control.
Depending on where the Devil shows up in your tarot spread, it can warn you for scams, obsessions, or (future) debts. Below you can find the most important Devil tarot card combinations.
The Devil and the Lovers or the Two of Cups
Love should involve mutual respect and connection, but these pairings represent something much different. Obsession and jealousy are in the works when the Devil chains himself to the Lovers card or the Two of Cups.
If you are the jealous partner, take some time to figure out what is causing these extreme emotions, and deal accordingly.
If it’s your partner who is displaying obsessive/jealous behavior, you need to work on setting firm boundaries.
In the end, if your partner can’t respect the lines you draw in the sand, you may have to cut your losses.
The Devil and the Five of Pentacles
Are you drowning in debt? If not, you should watch your spending, or you will be. The Devil and the Five of Pentacles represent piling bills and an overwhelming amount of debt.
Even the best of us fall on hard times. For this reason, it is crucial to put money away during the times when things are going swimmingly. Take a look at your budget if you have one and decide what spending can be cut out.
The Devil and the Magician
A con artist is in your midst. This is the message of the Magician and the Devil when they fall in the same reading. Be careful of those inside and outside of your inner circle who might try to convince you to do something that doesn’t feel quite right.
Avoid ‘get rich quick’ schemes, love affairs, and picking up unhealthy habits. Your subconscious mind and spirit guides will direct your path if you’re willing to listen.
The Devil and the Two of Swords
The Devil is usually connected to bad choices of a physical nature. However, when the Two of Swords appears alongside Baphomet, the issue is psychological in nature.
Are you having trouble speaking up for yourself? Do you tend to give into people-pleasing? Avoiding conflict is honorable, but when taken to the extreme, it can cause you to swallow your own thoughts and feelings.
Doing this over and over again keeps you chained to the will of others. This leads to anxiety, depression, and feelings of helplessness.
One way to combat this is to set boundaries early on and make an effort to speak up for yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable. Doing so will boost your confidence and sense of self-respect.

Dear Wille,
What do you think about reversed Devil in a “should I stay-current job, or should I go-new job”- question?
If i go- the new job cards: Strength, Hanged Man, and Devil reversed.
(the stay- current job cards: Page of Cups reversed, Queen of Wands, Seven of Wands)
neither side is clearly promising 😀
Thank you very much in advance for your answer!
Vica
Wille says
The reversed Devil is all about letting go, and I think combined with Strength and the Hanged Man it does suggest that there will be new options out there for work that are exciting and different from where you are now! I think it is promising!

Hello,
I pulled the page of pentacles, the star, the devil reversed, and 8 of pentacles. I was asking for clarity in my current relationship since something happened and I was questioning if my person is lying and if our relationship is still on the right path. Although I have no clue how to interpret this since it’s academic. Theft, privation, abandonment,
although another reading suggests hope and bright
prospects in the future Trust
faith in the process; you are still on the
that your path to love is guided and pro-
right path. Inspiration is on the way, so
tected, and that the difficulties of the past are behind you. Independence, freedom The reversed Devil in a reading can be a
good sign, pointing to a renewal of hope
or abandonment of a toxic or unhealthy
situation. This card in reverse points to
freedom from an old and destructive
pattern. It also can suggest that making a
difficult or unpopular decision will be for
the best. And finally, The Eight of Pentacles reminds you that when you do what you love, you will love what you do… so, I have no clue how to follow this along anymore.
Wille says
I think that these cards suggest that there is hope for you, as long as you both leave negativity behind and be honest with each other. If you both want to work on things, it will take a while, but it will pay off!

I did a love reading on if me and my ex would get back together and for the position of “His feelings about reconciling with me” i pulled the devil card upright. I associated this with that he is fearful of us getting back together. So then i went to clarify the card and asked the deck to explain what he is fearful of about getting back together with me, and then i pulled the 9 of cups upright. I have no idea what this means can someone please explain this to me.
Wille says
Hi Carlee,
Here is in short how I see it: the Devil tarot card symbolizes how unhealthy bonds can make you feel out of control. So in your spread, this card might indicate that your ex is afraid of an unhealthy bond and feeling powerless in your relationship. To solve this, the Nine of Cup tells me that you and your ex should spend the necessary time building a solid foundation to stand on. Hope this made sense✨ Love, Wille

Thank you for the effort you put into your blog. I am pulling three cards for past, present, and future. Today I pulled Reversed The Magician for past, Reversed Ten of Wands for present, and The Devil for future. I have often interpreted the future pull as the outcome of my present, but in this case I do not see the connection. The Ten of Wands is easy to interpret because I am being overworked on a project, taking too much on myself, and I am seeking to lighten the load. How do I interpret the Devil as an outcome? I feel that perhaps it means I need to take action to avoid bondage (metaphorical bondage) or being taken advantage of by my employer. Do you have any insight?
Wille says
Hi Cory, thanks for your comment! I find it very insightful that you see your future as an outcome of your present ✨ Your interpretation seems very reasonable to me, and if this what your intuition tells you – I would trust that ✨ The Devil tarot card as the outcome card tells me that you should redirect your attention away from your workload (in your case) and toward the things that really matter. Hope this makes sense!
Best,
Wille ????

Hello! I’ve done a Tarot Interview Spread with my Rider-Waite Tarot Deck. It was a three-card Tarot spread. The first meant what card best represented the deck’s vibes, energy and matters like that. The second meant what the deck wanted to teach me. The last one meant what card shows the special connection we share. I got the Devil for the first one, the Two of Cups (Reversed) for the second, and the Six of Cups (Upright) for the last one. Is this a bad deck? I really hope it isn’t…
Wille says
Hi Isaiah, Thanks so much for your comment. May I ask what kind of deck it is? And what kind of vibes do you get from it? Sometimes it also helps to clear and cleanse your deck before using it. Have you already tried that? If not, check out this article with tips on how to clear and cleanse your tarot deck: https://alittlesparkofjoy.com/how-to-cleanse-tarot-cards/. Good luck???? Wille
Chris says
I pulled the nine of cups and the devil in reverse as an overall energy for a relationship. I’m learning so it’s quite confusing to interpret!
Wille says
Hi Chris, thanks for your comment???? In love, the Nine of Cups generally confirms that your relationship is on the right track. You and your partner spent the necessary time building a solid foundation to stand on, and your work shows through. The Devil tarot card often appears in the upside-down position when the person receiving the reading is preparing to go to a higher plane. There is one catch though–you must first let go of negative and unhealthy attachments. By detaching, you’ll be able to reclaim your power and freedom. So when these two are combined I think it means that the relationship is on the right track and will be ready to go to a higher plane as long as you’re not holding on to unhealthy attachments.
Hope this makes sense✨

First, I Love your website and thank you for posting so much insight on the tarot!
Just wanted to offer my personal experiences on the devil card for different perspectives.
I had the devil paired with the 2 of cups in a reading I recently did in regards to a current long distance relationship. I would say the two combined is not always bad a bad thing.
We’ve known each other for 24 years and have gone through life experiences that have opened both our eyes to this connection but we are at a distance from each other. I can say that it has caused a lot of lust and want to be with each other however our circumstances are not currently allowing due to recently taking on a new career, covid, living at a distance from each other and some other personal matters that we are waiting to tie up. Other confirming cards of a positive outcome were future travel: 8 of wands paired with knight of wands, lovers, the world, 4 of wands, 10 of cups, empress and ace of cups.
I feel like the entire spread definitely needs to be taken into context with this one because it could just mean lust for someone or beginning a relationship very passionately or feeling like you’re tied down due to other circumstances and not able to physically be with the person that you are connected to.
My previous relationship: Tower, devil, hierophant, justice to name a few, was equally right on in a much different way. Ex was definitely a very controlling individual, suffered with addictions, toxic, narcissistic behaviors and we spent years in family court because he just could not let go of the control. The tower opened my eyes to my own codependency and was the hardest experience of my life. In turn these events became the catalyst to recognizing my own self limiting beliefs and behaviors and gave me direction to find my own inner power and completely turn my life around.
Wille says
Thank you so much for sharing this insight! I believe that your intuition and the other surrounding cards always have an influence on the meaning. So it’s definitely good to read the cards with that in mind. And your example shows that there are different interpretations possible. Thanks and have a great day ✨
Mary says
Thanks for the great detailed explanation on this card!
I did a spread related to achieving my dream and got The World as the strongest aspect which made me so happy! The Fool was the helpful energy, The Sun was actually something to look out for. The Tower and Temperance came up together, which I think represent my current state of delving into spirituality, which has had its ups and downs. Been struggling with random anxiety. But lastly came up The Devil as the outcome. Since my dream relates to having money to buy a house I think it relates to the material obsession. I also interpret it as, when my dream is finally fulfilled, I’ll have buried my old demons, my old insecurities and anxieties related to this matter and feel accomplished as The World has shown (and I do have quite a few trips on my wishlist too).
Wille says
Hi Mary, thanks for your comment ????You did a great job interpreting the cards! I wish you the best of luck with all of your dreams and plans ✨✨✨
Love,
Wille
