Are you new to Tarot reading? Or are you looking to enhance your connection with the cards? Starting a daily Tarot practice is a great way to further your understanding of Tarot and gain guidance and personal reflection.
Life can get pretty busy, and we may forget to check in with Tarot and nurture our daily Tarot practice. I remember when I first began reading the cards. It was all really daunting, and I sometimes went months without performing a Tarot reading. I was nervous about all the cards I had yet to learn, and I didn’t know how to get the most out of Tarot.
Then, I decided to incorporate a daily Tarot practice into my routine. I started to take half an hour before bed to select a card, reflect on its meaning, and journal my thoughts and feelings. I would brush my teeth, wash my face, and then sit down with my deck!
So, what are the benefits of a daily Tarot practice, and what is the best way to incorporate Tarot into your daily routine?
Why Start a Daily Tarot Practice
After I incorporated a daily Tarot practice in my routine, my Tarot skills developed dramatically. I was giving myself the time to learn the cards and making sure I was regularly selecting cards and reflecting on their meanings.
Like anything, practice makes perfect when it comes to Tarot. I have talked to so many people who, after learning I am a Tarot reader, have always said, ‘I have had a deck for years, but I am finding it so hard to learn all the different meanings.’
I am sure you can relate! I was there at one point. But, it is important not to give up when you are struggling to learn the different meanings. One day it will all fall into place for you and feel amazing!
A daily Tarot practice allows you to keep going with Tarot and develop a deep understanding of the cards. Furthermore, it is also a fantastic way to give yourself a time of self-reflection and winding down.
Most nights, I still perform a daily Tarot reading, selecting a card from a Tarot or oracle deck and reflecting on its meaning. It allows me to draw a line under the day and think about what it has brought me. The modern world can be so hectic and confusing, and daily Tarot helps me reconnect with my soul and find peace.
How To Start a Daily Tarot Practice
So, how can you incorporate Tarot into your daily routine? Tarot is super personal to everyone, and your daily Tarot practice will be unique to you. However, there are some things to consider.
Time of Day
I always perform Tarot readings at night, with my daily Tarot practice done just before bed. This is what I prefer, as I feel it gives me a chance to finish the day, reflect on what I have learned, and get ready for a good sleep.
I also like the energy that surrounds me at this time. There is something magical about the night, where everything feels super quiet, as if the whole world is asleep. I am a night owl and feel that time around midnight is my time. My time for self-reflection, learning, and growth.
However, I know many people who prefer doing their daily Tarot readings in the morning! Picking a card every morning sets you up for the day ahead, providing you with some guidance.
Picking a card every morning also means you can return to it at the end of the day and reflect on its meaning again. You can further explore the card’s energy and how it impacted your day.
The time of day for your daily Tarot practice is up to you and what feels best. You may want to spend a week doing it in the morning and then a week doing it at night. Then, you can see what works best for you!
Place
Having a specific place in your home for your daily Tarot practice is also helpful. Many people who work with Tarot cards have a designated altar for their readings. An altar is a workshop for your Tarot reading and other spiritual practices and is usually a small desk or table. However, it can be anything you want, and what it looks like is totally up to you!
You may prefer having a Tarot cloth you can put down where you want to do your readings. Tarot cloths provide you with a space to perform readings, free from clutter and other distractions.
It is important not to do your daily Tarot readings in the space you work at. Many of us work from home and have a desk set up, and it can be tempting to perform your reading there. However, you may feel distracted here as you associate it with work.
I always perform my personal Tarot readings in my bedroom. My bedroom is my safe space to relax and recuperate, so I feel very calm in this room. I place my Tarot cloth on the floor, light a few candles, and get reading!
Before Your Daily Tarot Practice
Tarot reading is all about connecting with our inner voice and reflecting on different aspects of life and spirituality. This means we need to be in the right mindset for our daily Tarot practice to get everything we can from our reading.
Cleanse Your Space
Tarot cards are affected by external energy, so you may want to cleanse your space before your reading.
You can cleanse your space by:
- Burning sage
- Using a crystal wand
- Using sounds, such as a singing bowl or harmonium.
Cleansing is an important part of any spiritual practice as it prepares you and your space for reflection and guidance. As you cleanse your area, visualize any negative energy leaving your body and home.
Spiritual Objects
Lighting candles or incense boosts the positive vibes of your space, allowing you to release any negativity before turning to the cards. As you light your candle or incense, set your intentions for your reading. Do you want it to give you general guidance? Or, have you a question you want to ask the cards?
Crystals can also boost your Tarot reading practices. Crystals hold energy that can enhance feelings of calm, spiritual connection, and intuition.
Here are some crystals for Tarot that you can incorporate into your daily Tarot routine:
- Amethyst: Connected to the Crown and Third Eye Chakra, Amethyst boosts spiritual enlightenment and awareness. It is also a protective crystal that guards your energy during readings. Hold an Amethyst in your hand while you reflect on the cards you have received.
- Black Tourmaline: Black Tourmaline is a grounding crystal that shields you from external influences during a reading. It also helps you center yourself. Meditate with a Black Tourmaline crystal before you perform your reading.
- Clear Quartz: Clear Quartz amplifies your energy and boosts concentration. Have a Clear Quartz near you during a reading.
- Labradorite: Labrodite boosts intuition and awareness during a Tarot reading, helping you find your truth in the cards. Place a Labradorite near you while reading the Tarot and hold it when you want clarity on a specific card.
- Rose Quartz: Rose Quartz is an incredibly soothing crystal that can help you release your worries before a reading. Hold it in your hands while you meditate and center your energy.
Meditation
Before performing your reading, take a moment for meditation and pause. Inhale and exhale while visualizing worries and concerns of the day being released from your body. If you are performing your daily Tarot reading at the end of the day, allow your mind to think about the day you have had and then gently release the thoughts.
Tarot cards connect with our energy, so it is important to center yourself before your reading. Take note of how you are feeling and any worries you have. Bring your energy back into your soul while focusing on your breath.
After Your Daily Tarot Practice
Once you have performed your reading and reflected on the cards you have received, you may find it useful to write down your thoughts in a Tarot journal. This helps you explore the meaning of the cards and what they represent for you right now.
Write down how your Tarot reading has made you feel and what sticks out for you. Reflect on the imagery of the cards. Are there any symbols that seem important?
When you are ready, gather up your cards and take a moment to thank them for their guidance. Then, carefully place them back in their box and put them away.
Daily Tarot Readings
So, what kind of readings should you do for your daily Tarot practice? Well, this is entirely up to you and what guidance you need!
Let’s look at some spreads that are perfect for your daily Tarot practice.
One-Card Spreads
A one-card spread is great for a daily Tarot reading. Whether you are reading the cards in the morning or at night, picking one card and reflecting on your meaning will bring your illumination and guidance.
Shuffle the deck while asking, ‘What do I need to know today?‘ Then, pick a card out and place it in front of you.
If something is on your mind, you might prefer asking a more direct question for a one-card reading. A yes or no Tarot reading allows you to get advice and direction on something specific during a one-card reading.
Three-Card Spreads
You may wish to do a daily three-card Tarot spread to further develop your Tarot reading skills. These allow you to gain a deeper understanding of your day and connect with the Tarot cards.
Of course, a three-card spread will take more time. However, it provides you with information and guidance on different aspects of your life.
Here are some three-card spreads for your daily Tarot readings:
- Career, Love, Home: This three-card spread will show you what energy each aspect of your life is bringing your today. It will provide you with guidance and advice regarding any issues you are facing.
- Opportunities, Challenges, Advice: This three-card Tarot spread is perfect for you if you do your daily Tarot practice in the morning! It will show you any opportunities coming your way today, challenges to the opportunities, and what you can overcome them.
- Strengths, Weaknesses, Advice: This three-card spread reflects your strengths and weaknesses that will come into play today. It will also provide you with advice on how to work with your strengths or overcome your weaknesses.
- Body, Mind, Spirit: Taking the time to check in with your body, mind, and spirit dramatically benefits your overall well-being. This three-card spread enhances your connection with yourself and provides you with advice and support.
It is great to mix up the spreads you perform daily. One day you may wish to perform a simple one-card reading, whereas the next day, you may want to perform a strengths, weaknesses, and advice spread.
