Human psychics respond to the rise of AI-generated readings

Human psychics are responding to a growing market for AI-generated readings, with some arguing that chatbots lack the personal connection central to their work, The Guardian reports. The services include mobile apps, websites and AI-generated psychics appearing on TikTok Live.

One app offers readings from chatbots including Urban Mystic. The app uses purchased coins for questions and consultations, with packages ranging from $9.99 to nearly $100, according to SSBCrack.

Urban Mystic offers readings through an app#

Urban Mystic has an AI-generated profile photo and gave a Guardian reporter claims about marriage, an aura color and a possible past life. The chatbot described its purpose as connecting on a soulful level, while its responses are generated by software.

SSBCrack reports that the app provides readings through text, video and voice, alongside palm reading and astrology services. The Guardian places it among a growing number of services offering algorithmically generated spiritual insight.

The Guardian describes the services as part of the divination industry. According to Wikipedia, divination uses ritual or practice to seek understanding of a question or situation. Its entry on psychics says the scientific consensus holds that psychic powers have not been proven.

Practitioners distinguish their work from AI#

Kellett, who coaches new practitioners, said she had shifted her teaching toward distinguishing human services from AI. She said AI-generated readings passed off as human work had become widespread online, and she encourages clients to post photos and videos of themselves.

Some human psychics advertise readings as AI-free, Digital Trends reports. Kellett has urged spiritual business owners to emphasize intuition and personal connection, qualities she believes AI cannot replicate. She also told The Guardian that chatbots lack the context of human social relationships.

A study presented at CHI 2026 interviewed 12 tarot practitioners who already used AI for personal readings, according to Digital Trends. Some sought reassurance about interpretations, while others looked for alternative perspectives. Participants also described opposition to AI in tarot communities and concerns about reliance on it.

Digital Trends reports that MysticTwin is recruiting psychics to train AI doubles for clients to use while the practitioners are offline. The company's website says it would take 50% of chat revenue and that customers would be told they are speaking with AI.
